The Silent Muse
Desperate for success, struggling artist Hannah Brennan buys a gorgeous unfinished painting at an estate sale, adds a few polishing touches, and claims the dead man's work as her own. The stolen masterpiece transforms her into an overnight sensation in the cutthroat New York art world. But her newfound glory quickly turns into a nightmare when she realizes someone is watching her—someone who knows the dangerous truth behind the canvas and the mysterious woman painted on it.

- Isabella invites Hannah to create a piece for the next Hawthorne Gallery exhibition.
- Hannah goes to an estate sale being put on by Maude and buys a painting of Ivan’s called The Muse.
- Hannah paints over Ivan’s work and passes it off as her own.
- One year later: Hannah arrives at the opening of her own solo show.
- Brooks asks Hannah why she painted The Muse with the woman’s eyes closed instead of open, making Hannah realize he knows what she did.
- Days later, Brooks sends Hannah a photo of her leaving the estate sale with The Muse.
- Brooks says his father painted it and demands Hannah give it to him or he’ll expose her.
- Instead, Hannah returns the painting to Maude and admits what she did.
- Maude tells Hannah that the woman in the painting is Olivia.
- Two years earlier, when Maude realized Ivan had fathered a child with Olivia, she drugged Olivia’s drink, causing the car crash that killed her.

- Brooks shows up intending to kill Hannah but freezes when she tells him she’s his half-sister.
I really enjoyed Lauren Ling Brown’s writing style; it’s super engaging and hooked me right away. The story itself is really interesting and while I guessed some of the twist, it was still well executed.
For a shorter story, Hannah was a well developed character. She felt like a real person, and watching her ethical struggle made the reveal hit much harder.
The only real letdown was the ending. It felt like the story just stopped out of nowhere right after things got intense. I loved the build-up and following Hannah’s journey, but I definitely wanted something more to wrap things up. I don’t need everything tied up in a bow but this book felt like it was missing a final page or two.
