How to use the SpoilThePlot app
Step-by-step instructions for every major feature. Expand a topic below.
Getting around (iPhone & iPad)
iPhone: Use the bottom tabs — Home, Search, Lists, and More. Library, Upcoming Releases, Themes, Settings, About, and Support Us are under More.
iPad: Use the left sidebar for Home, Library, Upcoming Releases, Explore by Theme, Search, My Lists, Support Us, Settings, and About.
The app needs an internet connection for catalog, search, lists, and spoiler content.
Browse Home, Library, and Upcoming Releases
- Open Home to see Fresh Spoils (recently added books), Upcoming Releases, and theme shortcuts.
- Tap a book cover to open its detail page, or use Keep browsing to open the full Library.
- In the Library, filter by genre and sort by Recently Added, Star Rating, Publication Date, or Title.
- Open Upcoming Releases for ARC-style previews. Filter by author when available, read About and Review, and use Pre-Order links when shown.
Upcoming Releases detail pages do not include in-app spoiler or trigger sections. Pull down on lists to refresh.
Search for a book
- Open the Search tab.
- Type a title, author, or series name — or open Other search options to filter by genre, page length, star rating, standalone vs series, and words to exclude.
- Scroll results to load more. Tap a result to open the book.
Enter a search term or at least one filter to run a search.
Explore by Theme
- Open Explore by Theme (from Home shortcuts, More on iPhone, or the iPad sidebar).
- Browse categories such as Popular Tropes, Pick Your Setting, and Holiday Thrillers.
- Open a theme to see its books. Sort by Recently Added, Title, Publication Date, or Length.
Major spoilers themes: Some theme lists show a warning overlay first. Confirm to continue, or go back. That acknowledgement lasts for the current app session only.
Reveal spoilers safely
On a book detail page, About and Review are always visible. Spoilers stay locked until you choose:
- Scroll to Spoilers, Character Fates, or Trigger Warnings (sections appear only when available for that book).
- Hold to Reveal for about two seconds. VoiceOver users can use the immediate reveal action when available.
- Spoiler content is requested from our servers only after you reveal a section.
Spoilers are hidden by default on purpose. Amazon and other buy links may include affiliate disclosures.
Create and manage reading lists (TBR)
Requires sign-in.
- Open Lists (iPhone) or My Lists (iPad), or tap Add to TBR from a book or Upcoming title.
- Create a list (or use / create a list named TBR). Choose layout, background, and optional fields such as series number, ratings, format tracker, date read, notes, and page count.
- Inside a list, mark books read, rate them, track formats (audiobook / Kindle / print), add dates and notes, reorder incomplete items, show completed titles, or remove items.
- Add a book manually with title and author when it is not in the catalog yet.
Lists sync online. Printable layouts are designed for the website PDF experience.
Use author checklists
Requires sign-in.
- Open Lists → Checklists.
- Create a checklist, choose a supported author, name it, and customize fields.
- Track progress the same way as lists: read status, ratings, formats, dates, and notes.
- To print or download a PDF, use Checklist PDFs on the web. If you are signed in, the app can open the website with your session so you do not need another magic link.
Only authors offered in the create flow are available for checklists.
Sign in or create an account
SpoilThePlot uses passwordless magic links. No password is stored.
- Open Settings → Sign in or create account (you may also be prompted from Lists or Add to TBR).
- Sign in: enter your email → Send sign-in link → open the link from your inbox to return to the app.
- Create account: enter your email, agree to the Privacy Policy, optionally choose Weekly Fresh Spoils email, Periodic Newsletter, and Daily Fresh Spoils push → confirm via the email we send.
- When signed in, your email appears in Settings. Use Sign out anytime.
Email and push notifications
Requires sign-in. Manage preferences in Settings.
- Weekly Fresh Spoils and Periodic Newsletter — email preferences. You can also manage or unsubscribe via links in those emails or on the website. Unsubscribing from email does not delete your account.
- Daily Fresh Spoils — optional push notifications when books are newly added to SpoilThePlot (not publisher release-date alerts). Enabling this asks for iOS notification permission.
Push preferences are managed in the app and iOS Settings, not through website unsubscribe tools. Tapping a Daily Fresh Spoils notification opens the Library (recently added).
Change appearance
- Open Settings.
- Under Appearance, choose Light, Dark, or Match device.
Light matches the SpoilThePlot website look and is the default.
Support SpoilThePlot with an optional tip
- Open Support Us (iPad sidebar) or the tip section under More (iPhone).
- Choose a tip amount processed by Apple In-App Purchase.
Tips are voluntary and do not unlock features, subscriptions, or memberships. Refunds, when available, follow Apple’s policies. See our Terms of Service for details.
