One Dark Night
On Halloween, a group of students gathers near the local legend of "Sally in the Wood," a road rumored to be haunted by a murdered girl. By dawn, the urban legend turns into a grim reality when one student is found dead. As the community spiraled into grief and paranoia, school counselor Rachel struggles to maintain a connection with her distant daughter, Ellie, while her ex-husband, Detective Ben, leads a high-stakes investigation that threatens to collide with his own personal crises.
Told through shifting perspectives, this atmospheric thriller follows a family fractured by secrets and a town gripped by the shadow of its past. While Ben hunts for a killer, he remains unaware that Ellie is hiding a dangerous truth about where she actually was that night. It is a suspenseful exploration of privilege, haunting folklore, and the lengths parents will go to protect—or uncover—the truth.

One Dark Night is a slow burn that provides a deeply immersive experience. The plot is intricate and the characters are developed with such depth that they feel entirely lived-in, grounding the story even as the tension begins to mount. The medium-sized chapters provide natural breaking points that keep the narrative momentum steady without feeling frantic.
I was deeply invested in Ellie and the secret she was hiding, while also sympathizing with Rachel and Ben and the uncomfortable positions the police investigation puts them into. The payoff for the slow-building suspense is exceptionally handled. The twist is genuinely surprising, landing with an impact that feels earned and ensuring the conclusion is as satisfying and well-executed as the rest of the novel. This book is a great pick for readers who love a slow burn with a lot of depth.
