Whisper Through the Pines
Branches tear, mist swirls, and a twisted smile cracks through the darkness before her world goes black.
Halloween night in Black Rock Falls turns deadly when two teenagers are found brutally murdered in the dense pine forest. Detective Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane arrive to a scene that will forever haunt them: innocent eyes wide with frozen fear, a makeshift camp now a graveyard, and only deep pink scratches on one victim's legs as a clue.
Determined to catch this sadistic killer, Jenna battles dead ends and the overwhelming scale of the sprawling woods. But when a frantic call reports a young girl in a white nightgown running for her life through the same treacherous woodland, Jenna's heart pounds. Racing against fading light and the encroaching forest, she gives no thought to her own safety, only to discover the girl has vanished, and Jenna has stepped directly into a meticulously laid trap.
As the pines close in and darkness falls, can Jenna outsmart a twisted hunter and escape the clutches of the wilderness before becoming the next victim?

- Two bloody heads are found on a vehicle in the woods, just like the Halloween legend of the Axman who killed couples on lovers’ lanes.
- Two women report seeing a girl in a blood-covered white nightgown walking along the road, just like the legend of the girl who leads people to their deaths in Stanton Forest on Halloween.
- Jenna and her team investigate and find two more severed heads.
- An axe was used to decapitate the victims.
- Kane finds evidence of a projector in the woods, which explains the ghost-like girl in the bloody nightgown.
- Emily determines that the axe used on all four victims has a defect, so if they find the axe, it can be matched to the victims’ wounds.
- The heads of two males are found on a table in a hunting cabin.
- This killing follows the local myth of a young boy who died in a blizzard near a hunting cabin and returns every Halloween to knock on doors and beg to be let inside.
- Locals call in about a man in a white truck sitting outside the elementary school during dismissal.
- Police identify three men in town with white trucks: Caleb, Jonah and Mason.
- Caleb tells police he was at the school to pick up his niece while his sister was out of town.
- Marty tells police that the night of the first murders he saw Jonah sneak off the property carrying an axe.

- Mason is arrested and admits to the murders.
- He killed Durnell because he was a child predator who victimized Mason when he was younger, and the others were just practice.
The Halloween atmosphere in Whisper Through the Pines was really good. I enjoyed the main investigation, especially the way the local legends of the town were woven into the mystery. It made for an entertaining and easy read that kept me curious about where the investigation would lead.
I did find there were a lot of characters to keep track of, which may be partly because this is book thirty-one in the series. The book worked okay as a standalone, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the earlier books and already knew the characters and their backgrounds. A few details felt a little out of place for the same reason. The side story involving Jill also felt disconnected from the main investigation and more like a distraction than something that added to the story.
Overall, I enjoyed the mystery, the creepy Halloween vibes, and the small-town setting. It was a quick, entertaining read, and I would definitely be interested in seeing what happens with these characters next.
If you like Halloween atmospheres, creepy mysteries, and small-town police investigations, then you will enjoy this book.
