When She Escaped
Seeking isolation to pen her latest psychological thriller, bestselling author Zipporah Bazile retreats to the opulent Raven’s Hollow Resort. Her work-in-progress—a dark tale of a woman held captive in a remote basement—is meant to stay strictly on the page. But as Zipporah explores the resort's secluded grounds, the line between fiction and reality begins to blur.
Shadowy footsteps echo on the hiking trails. A digital stalker exhumes her private life. Unexplained powders appear in her drinks. Even her burgeoning romance with a fellow guest becomes tainted by paranoia: is he a safe harbor, or part of a sinister plot? As mind-bending secrets come to light, Zipporah’s grip on her sanity fractures. To survive, she must confront the horrifying truth about her past, her identity, and the novel she's writing—before she inadvertently drafts her own deadly conclusion.

When She Escaped takes its time setting the stage, making the initial pacing feel a bit slow as you try to piece together exactly who the real main character is - Zipporah or her character, Hannah. Right at the 50% mark, Jenifer Ruff drops a massive twist that shifts the reality of the story. From there, the short chapters take over and the pacing flies. The book is divided into three distinct parts, which helps keep the complex storyline from getting confusing. Ruff manages to navigate heavy themes with care, pulling off some wild twists before wrapping all the complex threads up with a solid ending. This book is great for anyone who loves a huge twist in the middle instead of at the end of a book.
- Travis - Dead - Killed by Katya during Emma’s captivity
- Emma - Alive - Famous author
