The Wives
Meeting Daniel felt like hitting the jackpot: he’s wealthy, handsome, and the kind of man who can make all of Natasha's dreams come true. She may not be the perfect wife, but she’s determined to play the part. When Daniel sweeps Natasha and her three closest friends—along with their husbands—away on an all-expenses-paid luxury cruise, it seems like the ultimate proof that she has finally "made it".
But once the ship hits open water, the glittering facade of their perfect life begins to fracture. Daniel is hiding dark, dangerous secrets that threaten to surface at any moment. As tensions rise among the group, Natasha realizes she isn't the only one with a motive; every wife on board has a reason to want Daniel dead. In the middle of the ocean, with nowhere to run, this "dream" vacation is about to become a deadly nightmare where the price of admission might be their lives.

The Wives by Valerie Keogh is a slow-paced cruise thriller that leans heavily into internal monologues. While it fits the bill for a vacation-gone-wrong story packed with secrets, the narrative focuses much more on the women's internal thoughts than actual events or dialogue unfolding on the page.
The character development struggles to find its footing. The wives are given good backstories, but they lack distinct, fleshed-out personalities, which makes them difficult to connect with or relate to. I also wish the husbands had been given bigger roles. They are present and have their own interesting storylines introduced, but those plot threads are ultimately left hanging without resolution.
Despite the slower pacing and heavy internal focus, the book does deliver a genuinely good ending. Overall, it is an okay read. If you are looking for a secluded cruise thriller where everyone is hiding something, and you don't mind a story driven by internal thoughts rather than fast-paced action, this one might be right up your alley.
