The Night Shift
On New Year’s Eve 1999, the world waits for a digital collapse that never arrives, but for four teenagers working at a New Jersey Blockbuster, the night ends in a very real massacre. Only one girl survives, while the primary suspect—the boyfriend of one of the victims—disappears without a trace. Fifteen years later, the same town is rocked by a near-identical attack at an ice cream parlor, once again leaving only a single survivor in its wake.
In the shadow of the new tragedy, three lives are pulled together: the survivor of the original Blockbuster murders who is forced back into her past, the brother of the long-lost fugitive who is certain the wrong man was blamed, and FBI agent Sarah Keller. To solve the current case, Keller must dig through years of secrets and teenage betrayals, connecting the dots between two bloody night shifts to finally uncover a hidden truth.

- Bob - Sarah’s husband
- Madison - Ice cream shop murder victim
- Hannah - Ice cream shop murder victim
- Steve - Blockbuster murder victim
- Mandy - Blockbuster murder victim
- Candy - Blockbuster murder victim
- Katie - Blockbuster murder victim
- Day 1
- Hannah and Madison are killed in the ice cream shop murders.
- Vince is the primary suspect.
- Vince was arrested for the Blockbuster murders in 1999, but a public defender secured his release due to insufficient probable cause. He fled and has not been seen since. The murder weapon was later found in his school locker.
- Day 2
- Katie had been pregnant before the murders; no one knew her boyfriend’s identity, only that he was abusive.
- Mr. Steadman tells Ella there are rumors Jesse transferred due to an inappropriate relationship with a teacher, Chad Parke, at her previous school.
- Chad claims he mentored Jesse on the school paper. When he suspected she was developing feelings, he made it clear nothing would happen. He says Jesse then began stalking him, broke into his house, and got into his bed naked.
- Jesse is arrested for the ice cream murders.
- Day 3
- The body of Mary is found in a barrel in a storage unit owned by Rusty.
- Jesse claims she believes Chad drugged and sexually assaulted her.
- Jesse had been researching the Blockbuster murders because she is the baby Katie was pregnant with at the time. Katie gave her up for adoption.
- Joe is the family friend who covered up Katie’s pregnancy in the police report.
- Ella, Katie, and Mandy’s fathers killed Vince and buried him in Ella’s father’s garden shortly after his release from prison.
- Ella’s father couldn’t live with the guilt and killed himself.
- Mr. Steadman is the connection between all the victims; he had been the driving instructor for each of them.
- Mr. Steadman committed the murders because in 1999, when Katie ended their relationship and he began stalking her, Candy and Mandy threatened to expose his relationship with Katie if he did not leave her alone. Mr. Steadman is Jesse’s father.
- The same pattern repeated when Hannah ended her relationship with Mr. Steadman; he began stalking her, and Madison planned to tell her mother.
- Mr. Steadman kills Atticus.
- Keller kills Mr. Steadman in self-defense by driving an arrow into his throat.
- Epilogue: Ella and Chris survive and create a travel vlog where they help people.
- Chad is arrested after multiple other girls come forward with stories similar to Jesse’s.
Alex Finlay’s The Night Shift is a complex, multi-layered thriller that juggles a lot of moving parts. The story unfolds through short chapters and shifting points of view, but it introduces way too many characters to keep track of.
Where this book truly shines is in its intricate plotting. Aside from the central murder investigation, there are numerous side mysteries woven into the narrative that are equally as intriguing. The story consistently keeps you guessing, and the concurrent storylines are managed so well that none of them feel like an afterthought.
I really enjoyed how the ending of the book was handled. Instead of relying on a massive information dump in the final chapters, the answers to all the mysteries are revealed steadily throughout the last section of the book. Everything comes together incredibly well, making for a highly satisfying and natural conclusion.
The Night Shift is a fantastic pick for anyone who loves having multiple mysteries unfolding at once and doesn't mind keeping up with a large cast of characters and a complex narrative structure.
