The Family Secret
On the surface, Charlotte Harper’s life is flawless: a stunning home in the Cheshire countryside, a dedicated husband, and a beloved young son. But her reality shatters when a sudden collapse leads to a diagnosis of a rare, fatal blood disorder. Her only hope for survival is a bone marrow transplant.
Salvation arrives in the form of a secret from the past: John, a biological brother Charlotte never knew existed, who was adopted out at birth. He is a genetic match and agrees to the procedure. But when John moves into the family home to recover, the atmosphere changes from gratitude to dread.
Unsettling guests, secretive phone calls, and subtle intimidation tactics turn Charlotte’s safe haven into a prison. As John’s true nature is revealed, Charlotte realizes the heavy cost of his donation. He didn’t return to give her a second chance at life; he returned to steal one for himself.

- One of John’s men takes Bobby away to make Charlotte behave.

- Charlotte lets him in, and when John comes back and sees one of the drug bags slightly disturbed, he thinks Victor is to blame.
- John takes Victor away.
- Bobby’s school calls to ask why he’s been absent for two days and Martin slips up and tells them he’s gone missing.
- Police show up at the house and open a missing persons investigation.
- Charlotte asks to talk to Bobby, and John says he’ll let Bobby call and leave a voicemail.
- Charlotte asks john if he killed their mother and the smirk on his face tells her he did.
- Police search the woods near the house for Bobby but find Victor’s body instead.
- Police arrest Martin for the murder of Bobby.
- John clears out of the annex.

- The police investigate John and realize Charlotte is telling the truth, so they release Martin and start looking for John.
- Charlotte and Martin listen to Bobby’s voicemail, and Charlotte recognizes a sound from the site visit to the chapel she took John to earlier.
- Charlotte and Martin go to the chapel and find John and Bobby.
- John tells Charlotte he killed Miriam.
- Martin attacks John, and Charlotte stabs him with a needle of heroin, killing him.
- Police arrive and assume John overdosed on his own.
- A month later and the family are working on getting back to normal.
The writing in The Family Secret is good—the prose is smooth and the atmosphere is there—but the pacing was pretty slow for my personal taste. This book is quite a slow burn.
Also, I struggle to really classify this as a thriller. It has plenty of mystery and a consistent undercurrent of suspense, but it lacks the thrills or shocking twists that usually define the genre for me. If you enjoy well-written, atmospheric family suspense with lots of tension, this is a great pick. The author is talented, and if you like a slow burn, you should check this one out.
