The Court of Shadows
Louis opens his eyes to a courtroom unlike any on earth. Here, there are no defense attorneys, no due process, and no hope of an appeal. The faceless jury has already reached its verdict, and the judge exists solely to deliver the sentence. But as the spectral trial begins, Louis isn't judged for the malicious sins he committed—he is condemned for the times he did nothing at all. Forced to witness a lifetime of cowardice, silence, and self-preservation, the illusion of his own innocence is violently stripped away. Yet, the Court of Shadows doesn't merely deal in damnation; it offers a single, agonizing choice. To finally take responsibility for his life, Louis must answer the one question he’s always run from: when there is nowhere left to hide, who is he truly willing to sacrifice?

The Court of Shadows is an emotional short story that blew me away. Cahaney weaves a profound exploration of the consequences of our choices, through the main character, Louis.
Watching Louis learn how a single action can ripple out and alter everything makes for a deeply compelling read. The emotional weight grows heavier as the story progresses, leading right into a phenomenal conclusion. The ending strikes the exact right balance, wrapping up his intense journey with a payoff that lingers. It is a beautifully crafted, fast-moving story with genuine emotional depth, and I highly recommend picking it up.
