- The boat rolled, and Toby was slammed into the hull, shattering his skull.
- Finn got tangled in some lines and drowned.
- Kieran and Olivia got out safely, but no one realized Olivia was in the water, so Kieran was blamed for Toby and Finn’s deaths.
- During the storm Brian saw Gabby on the beach and told her to go home before the storm got worse. Gabby was never seen again but her backpack was found in the water several days later.
- Now: Police are trying to locate Bronte’s missing camera.
- Someone posts the link to Bronte’s photos from her camera online.
- Renn admits to Kieran that when police pulled the Nautilus Black out of the water after the storm, they found Gabby’s backpack in the dry storage.
- Renn saw Mallott remove the backpack from the boat, but Mallott said telling the families about the backpack being on the boat would only bring more questions than answers to the already grieving families so Renn kept quiet.
- Sean admits to Kieran what happened to Gabby: Sean had been at the marina waiting for Toby when he saw Gabby who asked him to take her to the caves to look for Olivia.
- Sean put her backpack on the Nautilus Black and wrote Toby a note saying he had gone to the caves.
- Deep in the caves, Sean kissed Gabby, and she immediately rebuffed him.
- Sean was embarrassed and stormed out of the caves. Gabby couldn’t keep up with him and was still down there when high tide came in.
- Toby and Liam sailed to the caves looking for Sean after finding his note.
- When Bronte showed Sean pictures she had taken in the cave and mentioned seeing his name carved into a wall next to a girl’s name and a date, Sean assumed Gabby had carved it and realized the police would eventually figure out what happened if Brontë showed anyone the picture or told anyone what she saw. Sean killed Brontë and stole her camera.
- Sean goes down to the caves to look for the carving Bronte found and refuses to stop looking when high tide starts to roll in.
Jane Harper builds a great sense of atmosphere when juggling dual timelines and overlapping tragedies. Her writing is captivating enough that even without action happening every minute, the steady, medium pace never feels boring. Tracking both a twelve-year-old cold case involving a girl named Gabby and a present-day murder requires following a large cast of characters, but the narrative keeps moving without getting bogged down.
All of the characters were well developed but I found the side storyline of Verity struggling with caring for Brian through his worsening dementia to be the most emotional and heartbreaking.
I appreciate how well the twists land because the red herrings are carefully unpacked and explained away rather than just dropped. The final conclusion feels abrupt, but I liked that the major questions get answered so it fits the overall story.
If you like coastal town settings, dual timeline mysteries, and cold cases, then you will enjoy this book.
