Kirsten is the kind of mother you will love to hate; every thought she has is filtered through social media performance, completely disconnected from her kids' feelings or privacy. Mostly alternating between her perspective and Maple's in the present tense creates an uncomfortable, front-row seat to a family slowly coming apart behind the curated posts. Maple balances the narrative out so well as an easy-to-relate-to, normal teenager, which only amplifies the tension as you watch her go through the motions and fulfill Kirsten’s endless demands out of sheer obligation. What really anchors the drama is how deep and well developed the characters are—not just Maple and Kirsten, but also Maple’s father, Garrett, giving the whole family dynamic a genuinely layered, messy feel.
Maple doesn’t go missing until well past the halfway mark, making the first half a tense, character-driven build-up centered on what her daily reality looks like leading up to that breaking point. Even though I clocked the twists pretty early on, I still found it hard to put down. The writing is sharp, the pacing pulls you right along, and the ending leaves things on an intriguing note that works nicely without wrapping everything up in a neat little bow.
