Sharp Truths
My world was built on facts, meticulously sorted into black and white. But now, fragments of unexplained images flicker at the edges of my vision, tearing at the very fabric of everything I believed. My logical life is unraveling, exposing a truth far sharper and more terrifying than I ever imagined.
- Madeline - Detective
- Hayden - Detective
- Matthew - Attorney
- Nadia - Social worker
- Mason Hughes - Retired Judge
- Madeline is called to Matthew’s murder scene.
- Madeline finds a tarot card in the victim’s pocket. The card symbolizes truth and clarity.
- Nadia is found murdered at an abandoned church while holding a tarot card symbolizing denial.
- Judge Hughes is found murdered on the courthouse steps with a tarot card beneath his shoe symbolizing betrayal and heartbreak.
- Madeline and Hayden are called to an abandoned psychiatric hospital, where they find a man sitting alone in a patient room.
- The man tells Madeline that she is “missing the point.”
- Madeline receives a mysterious text reading, “You missed a step.”
- Madeline returns to work and finds the first three tarot cards arranged on her desk alongside a fourth card symbolizing withdrawal from conflict.
- A fifth tarot card symbolizing conflict later appears on her desk.
- Madeline realizes the murders and tarot cards are part of a larger sequence she has been trying to solve.
- After reaching the final stage of the sequence, Madeline realizes she is not truly Detective Madeline Hamilton and declares herself “the end of the pattern.”
- An unknown man tells Madeline, “You did better this time,” before instructing her to begin “day one” again.
- Madeline leaves a white room and immediately resumes her role as a detective, asking Hayden, “What do we have?”
- The ending suggests the investigation has been part of a repeating psychological simulation, experiment, or therapeutic exercise.
The mystery was what drew me into Sharp Truths. The eerie atmosphere, trail of tarot cards, and unanswered questions kept me curious about where the story was headed.
The ending was interesting, though it was a little more confusing than I would have liked. I enjoyed how the story challenged me to rethink what I had read and put the pieces together. Even so, I enjoyed the mystery and thought it was a worthwhile read.
If you like psychological mysteries, tarot symbolism, and stories that blur the lines between reality and perception, then you will enjoy this book.
