It Ends at Midnight markets itself around an explosive New Year’s Eve party, but what Harriet Tyce actually delivers is more of a slow, tangled fuse. The celebration barely gets any page time until the very end, serving strictly as the finish line rather than the main event. Instead, the story spends its time unpacking old secrets and the corrosive, deeply frustrating dynamic between its two leads.
Sylvie is an absolute doormat who refuses to stand up for herself, while Tess is selfish, demanding, and thoroughly exhausting to follow. While the short chapters help keep the reading experience moving, the decision to bounce between three separate timelines ultimately kills the forward momentum - especially when one of those eras felt like pure filler designed to pad the mystery. Still, Tyce manages an intriguing core plot with several side stories that click together neatly by the end. The final reveal lands with more of a quiet shrug than a genuine shock since the twist is one that has been played out many times in this genre.
