If He Finds Us
The moment I saw him and his two children, I felt a sudden, desperate sense of safety. I convinced myself he could protect me, so I burrowed into their lives to hide from the man hunting me down.
But sanctuary is a trap. By staying here, I haven't just saved myself—I’ve placed a target on an innocent family. I’m hiding from a monster, but if he finds us, I’m terrified that I won’t be able to save them from what comes next.
- Sherry - Protagonist
- Marcus - Owner of the farm
- Elsie - Marcus’s daughter, 8
- Theo - Marcus’s son, 5
- Clarence - Grocery store cashier
- Sherry is running away from her ex and ends up in Texas.
- Marcus tells Sherry she can stay, saying she’ll fit in well because he and his children are hiding too.
- While putting her clothes into the dresser, Sherry notices the name Georgia scratched into the wood.
- Marcus tells Sherry that his wife was shot and killed five years ago by a man who was stalking her.
- The shooter got away and Marcus feared he’d come back and hurt them so he took the children and went into hiding.
- Marcus says he’s the one who carved Georgia’s name into the dresser drawer.
- After three months on the farm, Sherry feels at home and begins developing feelings for Marcus.
- Sherry borrows Marcus’s car and goes into town to do the weekly shopping.
- Clarence tells Sherry that the farm where Marcus lives is called ‘The Pointing Farm’ named after the Pointing family who used to live there.
- Sherry notices a man in the store watching her and when she gets in the car to leave he follows her.
- Sherry throw him off her trail before returning to the farm and telling Marcus.
- While they are talking the car that was following Sherry approaches the house.
- Marcus sends Sherry and the children to hide in the barn.
- While hiding in the barn, they hear a gunshot, and then Marcus comes inside and tells them they are safe.
- Epilogue: Marcus is digging a grave for the man he shot.
- The dead man is revealed to be Elsie and Theo’s real father.
- Marcus is revealed to be the person who stalked Elsie and Theo’s mother; after killing her, he shot her husband and stole the children.
- Marcus found the farmhouse, killed the elderly couple who lived there, buried them on the land, and took over the farm.
- Georgia is the name of the woman who lived in the house that Marcus killed, not Elsie and Theo’s mother.
This was a quick, entertaining read that I finished in one sitting. For a short story, the character development was decent. I found myself really sympathizing with Marcus.
The story moves at a breakneck pace, which kept me engaged. I admit, I saw the twist coming pretty early on - it wasn’t exactly a shocker - but I still really enjoyed the journey. If you need a solid palette cleanser between longer books, this is a great choice.
