Five Liars
The guest list for Brit and Joe’s joint white lie party is exclusive: the bride, the groom, the best man, a work friend, and me, the maid of honor. I’ve planned every detail, from the poolside drinking to a White Lie Party for sharing secrets. Confession is good for the soul, but one of us is hiding something killer. Don't forget to save the date.
- Brit - Bride-to-be (Child: New girl)
- Joe - Groom-to-be
- Darren - Joe’s friend, best man
- Tamara - Darren’s girlfriend (Child: Narrator)
- Lisa - Brit’s friend, maid of honor (Child: Friend of Brit across the street)
- Brenda - Brit’s work friend (Child: Friend of Tamara)
- Ginger and Walter - Foster parents
- Joe surprises Brit with a private jet to travel to Punta Cana but as soon as they arrive things start going wrong.
- Someone takes Joe and Brit’s luggage from in front of the house, there is no cell service and a hurricane is rapidly approaching.
- Soon the power goes out.
- Lisa gets lightheaded after drinking and goes to bed.
- Brit and Brenda go to check on Lisa and find blood on the stairs.
- They go to Lisa’s room but her door is locked.
- Joe and Darren go out into the storm with a ladder to climb through Lisa’s window.
- Joe gets in but Darren falls off the ladder.
- Brit and Brenda go looking for a first aid kit and find a box. Inside the box is a card from Lisa and t-shirts but they get interrupted before they can see what is written on them.
- Joe found Lisa in her bedroom with a head wound.
- Brit asks Lisa about the t-shirts but Lisa says she didn’t bring them and that she never sent any e-mails about a white lie party either.
- Brenda goes into the storm to look for Darren, she finds him and gets Joe to help her bring Darren into the house.
- Lisa and Brit go look at the t-shirts; each one has a different saying on it. “I’m not a liar.”
- “I’m not a cheater.” ”I’m not a fraud.”
- Brenda finds some paperwork in Darren’s room and shows it to Lisa who says it looks like Joe is running a Ponzi scheme and stealing from his clients, including Darren.
- When everyone else is preoccupied, Brit goes and reads the last two t-shirts which say “I am not an imposter” and “I’m not a murderer.”
- Then: The two children leave the basement and find Ginger and Walter dead.
- Suddenly Ginger wakes up and tries to strangle Brenda so Tamara shoots her with a gun she found lying next to Walter.
- Brenda’s fiancé broke up with her because someone sent him photos of her cheating on him during a trip to Vegas.
- Brenda thinks it was Brit but she swears it wasn’t.
- Tamara never forgot Brit trying to set her and Brenda up for their foster parents' murder.
- Years later when she found Brit again Tamara hatched a plan to destroy her, even going so far as to sabotage Brenda’s wedding when she felt Brenda was losing focus.
- It was Tamara who owned the villa and sent the emails.
- Lisa was Brit’s friend who she went to live with after Walter and Gingers' deaths.
- Tamara is the one who hit Lisa over the head with a candlestick and who caused Darren to fall off the ladder.
- Now: Tamara shoots Joe because she is one of his clients that he stole from.
- Brenda pushes Tamara and Lisa down the stairs, killing them.
- It was Lisa who unlocked the basement door and let Brenda and Tamara out because the basement was flooding. Brit never intended to frame Tamara and Brenda for murder.
- Brit tells Brenda that it was Lisa who murdered Walter and Ginger and Brenda believes her.
- Epilogue: Brenda gets promoted to Brit’s business partner and the business becomes a huge success.
- Brenda hints that she hated how Tamara was always so controlling and that Brenda left Brit alive to use her.
- Now that the company is half Brenda’s, something unfortunate might happen to Brit…
"Five Liars" by D.L. Fisher is a phenomenal, 5/5-star thriller that I could not put down. From start to finish, this was a fast-paced read that had me hooked.
The story is told from multiple points of view. While this can sometimes get confusing, this book has just the right amount of characters, making it easy to keep track of everyone and get invested in their side of the story. I also really enjoyed the narrative style; it's written mostly in the present tense with a few short flashbacks, which adds a good amount of mystery.
I found the plot twist to be clever and not easy to guess. And that ending! My jaw was literally on the floor. The cliffhanger is massive, and I am dying to know if (and when!) there will be a book two.
This was my first time reading a book by D.L. Fisher, and it certainly won't be my last. I will be actively seeking out more of her work. I highly recommend "Five Liars" to any thriller fan looking for a story that truly delivers. #FiveLiars #NetGalley
