A killer hook only carries a legal thriller so far when the execution gets bogged down in the gears. While the premise immediately caught my attention, the pacing struggled to find a steady rhythm to where I constantly found myself stepping away. The main plot focuses on Leila gathering evidence and defending an accused murderer in court, but the side storyline following @JustAnotherDumbBlonde never clicked into the core plot in a meaningful way. Instead of adding intrigue, it felt like an awkward layer added on to increase the shock factor of the reveal phase of the book.
Compounding that drag was Leila herself. Her personality was grating, and her reactions to key situations often felt stiff, unnatural, and awkward, making it hard to stay invested in her journey. The narrative focus felt somewhat off-balance, too; Julian could have used far more depth, and exploring his character with a few perspective chapters might have rounded him out and injected a little extra momentum into the dynamic. Instead, the central twist showed its hand far too early - I had it pieced together by the halfway mark - and the book spent far too long dragging out the final wrap up long after the suspense had completely evaporated.
